Belladonna.

homeopathic belladonna for childrenHomeopathic Belladonna should be in every parent’s cupboard, and is widely available: look for Belladonna 6C. Most useful for the sudden and intense children’s fever; they are irritable and tossing about, red-faced, maybe drowsy, maybe sweaty, maybe even delirious (contact your doctor please).

Sometimes it is earache, sometimes a sore throat, sometimes you do not know. Give as frequently as the severity suggests. Sleep is a good response.

A fever that comes on slowly will not usually respond to Belladonna – think of Gelsemium, Bryonia, Ferrum Phos. For a more detailed selection of children’s fever remedies, use the Natural Health Answers report to give you a personalised selection for your child.

Colloidal Silver.

This is widely available in health shops; some people even make their own. A very fine suspension of silver, which is said to stop the respiration of many infectious micro-organisms.

Colloidal Silver was used in the early 20th century by doctors in Britain and Europe, but was superseded by modern anti-biotics. It is has enjoyed a revival, and you will now see silver (not colloidal) included even in sticking-plasters! However, anxiety from the big pharmaceutical companies has lead to a clamp-down on colloidal silver, at least in the USA.

There have been scare stories about the toxicity of silver. Large amounts, long-term, can lead to problems, but small amounts, short-term, like this, are quite safe, even in babies. It can be applied both externally and internally for many infections, eg. impetigo, athletes foot, sore throats, or conjunctivitis. I would not be without it, especially for mild conjunctivitis. Naturally you should see a doctor or qualified health professional for any but mild infections.

I recommend buying it in a misting bottle, it is quick and easy to apply, for instance with conjunctivitis you can mist the whole eye. It is painless, odourless, tasteless and colourless. Always read the instructions, and watch the use-by date.

Elderberry (Sambucus).

elderberriesAn old fashioned remedy now proved by modern science. It boosts the immune response, helps fevers, fights catarrh, and combats allergies. It makes a great cough syrup. Research shows Elderberry is particularly helpful for ‘flu, speeding recovery time.

Elderberry capsules or tablets are suitable for older children. Anyone can use Elderberry Syrup (Sambucol or Sambucol for Kids); it tastes good, and can also be added to drinks.

"In case you're worried about what's going to become of the younger generation, it's going to grow up and start worrying about the younger generation. "
Roger Allen

Echinacea.

This popular herb helps the immune system in several ways. It enhances white cell activity, and increases wound healing. It is anti-viral, including cold, ‘flu and herpes viruses. It is anti-bacterial, internally and externally, for instance it can be used for sore throats or acne. It fights fungi and Candida.

Some people use it preventively in the cold season (take for 6-8 weeks then rest a week), and some use it for treating colds. It is especially useful for infections of the upper respiratory tract like colds and coughs. Echinacea is widely available as tablets, capsules or drops.

For children, drops are easy and taste pleasant; adult drops, such as Viridian Organic Echinacea, can be given in a reduced dose, or try Vogel Echinacea Complex drops (includes Plantain) or Echinacea Junior tablets (chewable). Do not use Echinacea with auto-immune diseases, immunosuppressive drugs, or allergy to daisies.

Check out Kiwiherb for their range of organic herbal remedies, some specially produced for children (always ask for advice about children's products):
Echinacea
Children's Echinacea
Marshmallow and Mullein, with Elecampane and White Horehound, for the respiratory system.
Echinacea Thyme and Liquorice especially for mouth and throat.

Plantain (Plantago).

This plant, a weed in all our lawns, is a good remedy for coughs, and acute or chronic bronchitis. It soothes irritated mucous membranes and is a mild expectorant. It is easy to use as drops and has a pleasant taste.

Look for Vogel Plantago drops or Viridian Organic Plantain drops. I have not read of any side effects or drug interactions with this herb.

Multi-vitamins.

It can be difficult to persuade children to take vitamins! But often you will see an improvement in their health when they do. Especially useful for the following:

  • Children who won’t eat vegetables.
  • Children prone to recurrent infections.
  • Before the start of a new school term.

These are several I have found good and pure; many common children’s vits contain loads of chemicals and additives. Please consider using a Natural Health Answers Report to find out about these. There are powders, drops, chewable tablets, mini capsules and pleasant-tasting liquids that may suit your child. Also consider homeopathic treatment, or an online consultation, as this can improve a child's health profoundly, and remove the tendency to dangerous coughs, allergies and so on.
viridikid childrens vitamins My favourite, the Viridian ViridiKID mini capsule!

Mini size vegetarian mult-vitamin, smaller than a pea. Easy to swallow, and a really good pure blend.
If you can’t find them locally, I can supply, see Ordering Supplements.

For injuries please see the First Aid page.

"Youth is a wonderful thing. What a crime to waste it on children. "
George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950)

Hay fever and Allergies:

Many hay fever remedies, even natural ones, are not safe for children. These ARE suitable.

Weleda Rhinodoron spray
Helps clear stuffy nose and relieve crusting. Contains sodium chloride, potassium chloride and Aloe Vera.

Nasaleze Nasal Spray
A fine vegetable cellulose powder that coats and protects the nasal lining: amazing! Lasts hours. Older children will find it easier to apply.

Biohealth Vitamin C Crystals
A non-acid vitamin C in powder form. Vitamin C is a safe natural antihistamine, and also aids the immune system and helps with stress. Children who cannot swallow pills, or children with hay fever at exam time, would especially benefit. Unlike many vitamin C powders, this one just tastes slightly chalky, is extremely economical, and is easy to dissolve in juice or water.

Quest BioC Complex
For older children who can swallow pills. Vitamin C as a natural antihistamine, with extra bioflavonoids which enhance the effect.

Homeopathic remedies

Several combination homeopathic remedies for hay fever are available. Weleda Mixed Pollen, Nelson’s Polenna, and other homeopathic remedies, are all quite safe for children, and even for babies.

Individual homeopathic remedies can be more helpful, especially if you have tried the combinations and they do not work for you. Remedies such as Allium Cepa, Sabadilla, Natrum Muriaticum and Euphrasia are widely available. If you would like more information, or if you are interested in a more personal homeopathic prescription for your child’s hay fever, use the Natural Health Answers Report.

Homeopathic constitutional treatment is the best way of all to balance the immune system so that allergens are not such a problem. On average within 2 years this can greatly reduce or eliminate the problem, while during the hayfever season, individual homeopathic remedies can offer rapid relief with no side-effects.

See Homeopathic Consultations for more information.
If there is no homeopath near you, I recommend an Online Homeopathic Consultation.

Nerves.

Children suffer from nervous problems just as adults do, but you may not want to use conventional anti-depressants, tranquillizers and so on.
For digestive problems teething and Colic please also see Natural Remedies for Crying Babies

Chamomile.

Very well known. Chamomile soothes the nervous system, so is useful for nervousness, teething, tantrums or insomnia. It calms the digestion, so is used for colic, irritable digestion, and crampy pain of stomach or intestines.

Homeopathic Chamomilla may help any teething-related problem in infants, for example diarrhoea, nightmares or earache.

Look for Nelsons Teetha (Which is chamomile), Weleda Chamomilla 3X drops or granules, or any brand of low potency Chamomilla (3X, 3C, 6C). Herbal chamomile can also be used: make chamomile tea from teabags or dried flowers, sweeten to taste, and give a few spoonfuls, just like Peter Rabbit’s mother!

TOP

Coffea.

This homeopathic remedy made from coffee, is the best remedy to use for sleeplessness from over-excitement. This can be useful before or after parties, outings or school trips. Do not confuse excitement with anticipatory nerves, for which other homeopathic remedies may be more useful: for example Argentum Nitricum, Gelsemium, Lycopodium, Silica. Use the Natural Health Answers REPORT for more detailed information for your child.

Use one or two doses, as required. The most widely available is Weleda Coffea 6C.

Do not give small children real coffee to drink!

TOP

Lavender.

lavenderFamiliar herb, usually used as an essential oil. Make sure your oil is pure, and not a blend designed for vaporizers. It is a gentle, strengthening tonic, useful for agitation, nervousness, insomnia, and general bad moods or aches and pains.

Use a little – less is more! Too much can have a stimulating effect on some. Dab on a hanky, the pillow, the skin, or use in a vaporizer. Also safe to apply directly to cuts, bites and minor burns, soothing, healing and a natural anti-biotic.

TOP

Lemon Balm (Melissa).

Calms the nerves, relieves wind and tummy ache, and soothes cramps including period pain. Easy to grow in the garden or a pot, in fact it spreads like mint! You can make a fresh tea. For digestive problems teething and Colic please also see Natural Remedies for Crying Babies

Available as essential oil (use with care).

Lemon balm should not be used with thyroid medication.

TOP

Bach Rescue Remedy.

This, or similar remedies produced by other companies (recovery remedy, 5-flower essence, etc.), is very useful. They are herbal drops, potentised in sunshine, for any emotional overdose or shock or anxiety; the drops help take the edge off it.

Give little and often. A few drops in every drink, in a water bottle, or straight on the tongue, at least 4 x day, preferably more. Or as needed, for accidents, parent’s arguments, exam nerves, first day at school, upsets with friends, sleep problems or fevers. Hot water will evaporate the alcohol if you wish.

Bach Rescue Remedy is available as drops, a handy spray, or a cream. Other brands are mainly available as drops, and children usually like them.

For injuries please see the First Aid page.

TOP

Valerian.

A well-known herb for sleeping problems, Valerian should only be used by children over 3. It tastes disgusting, so needs to be disguised! Valerian has been shown in trials to be an effective treatment for mild to moderate insomnia. It helps getting off to sleep, and increases the restfulness of sleep. It is especially helpful in combination with Lemon Balm. It is also generally relaxing, benefits brain chemistry and mood.

Children over 12 can take adult doses, and can probably swallow capsules. For children 3-12 years, try Viridian Organic Valerian drops or Vogel Valerian-Hops Complex, taken in juice.

TOP

Vervain

vervain for childrenA calming herb useful in convalescence. It is a mild liver tonic, it aids digestion, relieves depression,
and relaxes tension.

Vervain is slightly sedative and helps with insomnia. It is useful when recovering from any illness, for example influenza.

Avoid in pregnancy. Children 6-12 can take half the adult dose. Tastes slightly bitter.
Viridian Organic Vervain drops available from Ordering Supplements.

My Child Can't Swallow Pills!

Most young children can’t swallow pills. Here are some ideas.
  • Liquid herb drops can be added to any drink. Although some taste bitter (best taken in juice), most that I recommend taste fine.
  • Herb drops (tinctures) usually contain alcohol. If you don’t want this, a little hot water will dispel the alcohol.
  • Herbal tinctures, neat or in water, can be applied to the skin in key areas such as temples, wrists, feet, belly. Rescue remedy, or homeopathic remedies in water, can be used the same way. Or added to a bath.
  • Homeopathic pills are sucked or chewed, between meals. This is so much easier than swallowing tablets. If this is still a problem, crush the pill to a powder, either between two spoons, or in a fold of clean paper. Alternatively, dissolve the pill or powder in a little water. One dose is then a teaspoonful from the glass. Keep covered, and stir vigorously between doses with a stainless steel or wooden spoon. Make fresh after 48 hours. Don’t worry if the pill does not completely dissolve.
  • Capsules can be twisted open and the contents emptied into something: a drink, a pudding, yoghourt, mashed potato. Try it yourself first – for example, some things taste bad, like B vitamins, or Valerian!
  • To practice swallowing capsules, try frozen peas. Most children like them. They can play with them, eat them one at a time, and work up to swallowing them. And it’s vegetables! Watch them, because of choking, and because of cheating.
  • If you like, offer your child a reward system for taking medicine or vitamins.
  • You can also easily give children 'superfoods', which are usually pleasant-tasting and in powder or liquid form, so easily mixed with juice, yogourt, fruit smoothies, puddings, vegetables or soup. Superfoods, such as Frequensea, Barley or Wheat Grass powder, Green Food Powder and Spirulina, contain a wide range of plant-based nutrients. Nature's Plus KidzGreenz are chewable, and Glyconutrients Mannabears are tasty jellies. Long-term, and in quite small quantities, they will assist adequate nutrition for your child, with the minimum fuss.
