Many of us have difficulty keeping to our healthy weight, especially in our teens, after having children, or as we get older. It can be hard to sort out what we want from diets, appetite suppressants, slimming aids, weight loss products, fitness programmes, and the glycaemic index! I can help you reach your desired weight with natural, complementary treatment. I recommend a combination of homeopathic treatment, and carefully chosen products (available in health food shops or online).

I prefer to begin with homeopathic treatment. This takes into account your general health, medication from your doctor, and any problems you have which may affect your motivation and willpower. Then, if you feel you need a boost to get you started, you can add a weight loss product. I can help you choose one that is right for you. This approach is suitable for both men and women. Homeopathic treatment may also help children reach a healthy weight, but most weight-loss supplements are NOT suitable for children.

Amino Acids and Combination Products

Research has demonstrated that Tyrosine can suppress appetite. A lack of Tyrosine in the body can lead to increased appetite. Tyrosine is included in a number of amino-acid-based weight-loss supplements. Tyrosine also increases mental alertness, helps us adapt to stress, benefits the thyroid and may help lessen depression.

The technical name for tyrosine is L-Tyrosine.

Warnings: avoid if pregnant or breastfeeding.
Not recommended for long-term use.
caution with hypertension.avoid with melanoma.
not to be used with the MAO type of antidepressant.

Supplements: Not widely available as a single supplement, often in combinations.


Combination Amino Acid Slimming Products


Power Health Slim-Nite.

An amino-acid combination of 250mg Arginine, 250mg Ornithine and 25mg Carnitine. This is said to assist fat metabolism at night, and is suitable for those who cannot take caffeine-based slimming aids. Do not use with other amino acid products.

From the well established company that makes Trimmers, a thermogenic slimming product listed below. An amino-acid combination to assist fat-burning and support healthy metabolism. Night-time formula is free from caffeine.

Contains Arginine, Ornithine and Carnitine, Lysine, Glycine, Vit. B6 and chromium. Can be used alone or as an addition to Trimmers day-time formula, or other similar thermogenic weight-loss supplements. It should not be used with other amino acid combinations. It is suitable for those who cannot use caffeine-based slimming aids. 

Warnings: important : avoid if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Co-Enzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

CoQ10 and fitnessCoQ10 is an anti-oxidant that is made naturally by our bodies. Unfortunately, the amount declines with age. CoQ10 is vital in cell energy production throughout the body, and is essential for the healthy function of the hard-working heart muscles: low levels are considered a cause of heart problems.

In athletes, studies show CoQ10 can improve performance by up to 13%. CoQ10 has been shown to improve physical fitness and strengthen the heart by up to 20%, even in those with no physical ailments. It can be helpful if you suffer from low energy or constant tiredness, as some of us do in middle-age, or after an illness.

CoQ10 is helpful to those taking statins, tricyclic anti-depressants and some beta-blockers, as these can block natural CoQ10 production. It is also essential to gum health.

There are no restrictions on long-term use. CoQ10 is said to work well with Carnitine (see page 3).
You may notice improvements in your general energy.

Multi Vitamin/Mineral Supplements

An excellent idea for an all-round top-up for health and fitness – but make sure you buy a good one! Many widely available combinations are so low in nutrients, they are hardly worth buying, although they may look nice and cheap.

A good supplement needs:
  • Adequate quantities of basic nutrients (vitamins A, B, C, E, Calcium and Magnesium, at the very least).
  • Anti-oxidants to protect your cells from free radical damage. Look for CoEnzyme Q10, Zinc, Selenium, Alpha Lipoic Acid, flavonoids and carotenoids.
  • Micro-nutrients important for fitness, for example Manganese, Chromium, Boron.

Food Blocking Supplements

There are ever-increasing numbers of these 'diet' products, claiming to help you lose weight with no effort, because they block the body from absorbing certain classes of nutrient – carbohydrates, or fats. I will discuss a few to give you an idea of the range, below.

Buy and use with care – some block important nutrients, and I would never recommend them for long term use.

Fat Blocking Products

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)

CLA is a polyunsaturated fat, related to the Omega 6 family. As CLA occurs mainly in red meat and dairy products, many health-conscious people may not be eating much of it. CLA can be helpful in weight-loss or training programs. It is taken before meals with water.

Theoretically, CLA works by inhibiting fat storage; as a result, fat stays in circulation longer, allowing muscles to use it as a source of energy. Supplementing with CLA can lead to an increase in muscle mass and a decrease in fat mass. It can be useful after pregnancy to aid weight loss.

Although studies (using both animals and humans) are not in total agreement, data has shown that CLA increases metabolic rate, muscle growth, immune function and the effectiveness of insulin. We advise that those with blood sugar/insulin problems, including polycystic ovaries or Syndrome X, should not use CLA.

Warnings: diabetics, use only under supervision.

Swiss Health Fat-Magnets

Fat Magnets are quite well established. Made from Chitosan, which is a protein derived from shellfish, and has the property of binding to dietary fat. These capsules may also reduce cholesterol. This product needs to be taken before fat-containing meals and with water. I do not recommended this for long-term use, as some vitamins are fat-soluble and you may become deficient.

Warnings: not for those with fish or shellfish allergy.
