Thermogenic Products

thermogenicsThermogenic products encourage the body to use dietary calories to produce heat instead of energy or fat. ‘Thermogenic’ means ‘generating heat’. There are only two ways the body can dispose of excess consumed calories; it must store them as fat or dissipate them as heat. This is an important process, because it keeps calories from being stored as fat, and helps reduce the amount of fat that is already stored.

There are increasing numbers of this kind of product on the market: I will discuss a few to give you an idea; ingredients are usually similar, and beware of the extraordinary claims made by some of these products! Proper nutrition and moderate exercise will enhance the slimming effect. Please heed the health warnings.

Other thermogenic products are listed on
Page 3, Fitness and Training, including Colostrum, CLA, and training products. These products are aimed more at that market, but the ingredients and the effects are the same.

  • Some products use caffeine: while using them, avoid taking any extra caffeine (tea, coffee, chocolate, cola, Red Bull etc.). As caffeine is a diuretic, take plenty of water.
  • Taking caffeine after 3.00pm may result in sleep problems.
  • Some products also contain the stimulant ephedrin
  • I advise taking regular breaks from using these products; please read relevant instructions.
  • Not suitable for children.
  • Do not diet with these products - you don’t need to!

Chromium.

chromium and sugar cravingsChromium is a little different from other, combination, thermogenic products. It is a naturally occurring mineral, and one that we all need. It is included in many multi- vitamin/mineral supplements. There is good research to back its use. Chromium can help regulate sugar cravings, and is lacking in refined foods. Chromium is also essential for the manufacture of Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF), which helps regulate blood sugar.

Chromium deficiency may be involved in weight problems and type 2 diabetes.

It works best with adequate levels of vitamin C and Folic Acid.

Warnings: may enhance the effect of diabetes drugs: Use only under supervision.

Supplements: Widely available: sometimes called GTF (Glucose Tolerance Factor) Chromium.

Kaloss Trimmers.

This extremely popular formula works, like all thermogenic products, by speeding up the metabolism to help us burn calories faster. It is one of the longest established formulae.‘Trimmers for Slimmers’ also damp down the appetite and boost energy, using entirely natural ingredients. The thermogenic effect is derived from Kola and Mallow, and also from Chromium, a mineral well known to help weight loss. Kaloss Trimmers vegecaps contain Kola nut, Mallow, Ginger, Willow Bark, Bladderwrack, Saw Palmetto, Hawthorn, Citrus aurantium, Capsicum and Chromium. Mallow contains small amounts of ephedrine. Citrus Aurantium contains synephrine, a metabolic stimulant similar to ephedrine.

Green Tea

green teaAn extract is made from the pure leaves of the tea plant, not fermented as in black tea.

Green tea is antibacterial and contains strong anti-oxidants: stronger than either vitamin C or vitamin E. The principal active constituent in green tea is a catechin, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a polyphenol. Green tea contains more catechins than other kinds of tea. It also contains flavonoids, tannins, vitamin C and caffeine.

Green tea has traditionally been used as a cancer preventive, and regular consumption reduces blood pressure and cholesterol.

Green tea is used to aid weight control and is a common ingredient in many weight loss and fitness products. It contains caffeine, which is a well know thermogenic substance. Unlike coffee, tea does not make us feel as 'nervy', due to the other constituents that balance the caffeine. However some people are sensitive to it. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that green tea extract can gently assist fat loss.

Green tea is an ideal aid for people who want to gently manage their weight without resorting to the stronger products. As it is usually drunk without milk this also saves calories.

White tea is similar, and has a milder taste: it is made from the youngest leaves.

Warnings: physician’s guidance advised with warfarin or similar.
not to be used with the MAO type of antidepressant.
if you experience nervousness, trembling, nausea or sleeplessness, reduce dose or discontinue.

Contains caffeine. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should limit their intake because of caffeine content. Tannins in green tea may reduce absorption and bioavailability of codeine, atropine, and iron supplements (take 4 hours away from iron). Tea can pass into breast milk and cause sleep problems in babies. Avoid taking with other stimulating herbs eg. eg. coffee, guaraná, ephedra (ma huang) or mate.

More Information and Support.

This page lists some natural remedies - there are many others.

more infoWould you like more information?

Natural Health Answers REPORT provides you with answers matched carefully to your situation, your medical conditions, and your prescription medicines.

Ask up to 6 questions on any health subject. You can then choose in an informed way.

  • Save money spent on useless supplements
  • Save time spent searching for information, or trying unsuitable remedies.

Fitness, training and weight control are such personal subjects. Over-the-counter products may assist you, but they are not really the answer. I would not recommend most of them for long-term use. Long-term solutions come from addressing underlying health, training  or emotional issues. For example, some of us train/diet compulsively when we are unhappy, while others give it all up and pile weight on! Consider seeing a therapist or trainer locally, who can advise and support you, and check out my Online Homeopathic Consultations.
